Smart web image compression (AVIF, WebP, JPEG, PNG)

Limits

  • Similarity is measured with SSIM on a grayscale copy shrunk to at most 512 px. It is a proxy for how a picture looks, not a guarantee: colour shifts and fine detail can be missed, so check important images by eye.
  • AVIF is offered only when your browser can create AVIF files itself. Many browsers cannot, and then AVIF is skipped and the result says so. No encoder is downloaded.
  • WebP availability also depends on the browser. PNG is lossless, so it only wins on flat-colour graphics.
  • Metadata (EXIF, GPS, colour profiles) is always removed from re-encoded files. If the original is kept because it is already the smallest, it is returned unchanged, metadata included.
  • Animated GIFs keep only their first frame. HEIC/HEIF photos are not readable by most browsers.
  • The "smallest file" assumes similarity falls steadily as quality falls, which holds for normal photos; unusual images may land slightly above the smallest possible size.
  • Everything runs on your device; images are never uploaded.
