Limits

  • Base64 makes the data about 33% bigger than the picture file. Embedding a data URI larger than about 100 KB in HTML or CSS is a bad idea: it cannot be cached separately and slows the page down.
  • The picture is encoded exactly as it is, with no re-compression, so its metadata (EXIF, GPS) stays inside the Base64. Remove metadata first if you will share it.
  • Very long outputs are shortened on screen; the complete text is in the .txt file.
  • To go the other way (Base64 text to a picture), use Base64 to image.
  • Everything runs on your device; images are never uploaded.
