Limits
- MD5 is not offered: it is broken for security, two different files can share an MD5. Ask the publisher for a SHA-256.
- Files over 100 MB are read in 4 MB slices and hashed with an incremental SHA-256 (the browser has no streaming digest), so even a multi-gigabyte file does not fill memory.
- SHA-1, SHA-384 and SHA-512 use the browser's hashing and need the whole file in memory, so they are skipped for files over 512 MB. SHA-256 and CRC-32 have no such limit.
- A matching hash proves the file is identical to the one that was hashed; it does not prove the publisher is trustworthy.
