Limits
- First use downloads about 53 MB once: the MODNet matting model (26 MB, Apache-2.0, from huggingface.co) and the ONNX runtime (27 MB, from this site). After that it works offline.
- It is trained mostly on portraits. Other objects often work but can be cut too tightly or left with part of the background.
- Fine hair, fur, glass, smoke and other see-through things get soft or imperfect edges. Check the result on a dark and a light background before using it.
- The cut-out is found at reduced size and its edge is then scaled up, so edges on very large photos are slightly softer than the photo itself. Output is capped at 16 megapixels.
- It uses your GPU (WebGPU) when the browser offers it, otherwise the CPU through WebAssembly, which can take 10 to 60 seconds per photo on a phone.
- Photos stay on your device. Only the model files are downloaded.
